Overview
Aave v3 is a pooled-liquidity money market where suppliers earn variable yield and borrowers draw from shared liquidity against overcollateralized positions. Supersmooth uses Aave v3 for Borrow, Multiply, and Yield Loop positions. Every position is held in a user-owned Safe smart account, with atomic execution of flashloan, swap, deposit, and borrow in a single transaction.Origin and timeline
Stani Kulechov founded the protocol as ETHLend in 2017 for peer-to-peer loans, and relaunched it as Aave with pooled liquidity in January 2020. Aave v2, released in December 2020, added collateral swaps and gas optimizations. Aave v3, released in March 2022, added Efficiency Mode for higher LTVs on correlated assets, Isolation Mode, and cross-network deployments. The Aave DAO has governed Aave through the AAVE token since 2020. The Aave ecosystem now also includes the GHO stablecoin, the Umbrella safety system, and Aave V4, a new architecture built on a hub-and-spoke liquidity model.Design tradeoffs
- Unified liquidity: Aave v3 pools are deep and battle-tested, offering the deepest liquidity for blue-chip collateral. Risk is shared, so a bad asset listing affects the whole pool, though Isolation Mode mitigates this.
- Partial liquidations: Aave v3 liquidates positions in tranches via a close factor rather than wiping them at once, which is a gentler failure mode than full liquidation.
- Active governance: Aave parameters including LTVs, caps, and rates change by DAO vote. This produces responsive risk management, but parameters can change while a user holds a position.
- Efficiency Mode: Aave v3 E-mode enables very high LTVs, above 93% on ETH-correlated pairs, which is the backbone of ETH liquid-staking-token yield loops.
